Orange Ginger Scones

Orange zest, dark chocolate, ginger!? Ginger zap and orange zest zing play off the slight sweetness of the dark chocolate perfectly in these flaky, feed me more please! Scones have been around since the 1500’s and there is a reason we are still eating them today! Buttery and flaky quick bread that is relatively easy to pull together. There are alot of options with scones, you can go savory or sweet, add fruits, chocolates, spices. You really can’t go wrong, but I have to say this recipe is one of my favorites. I hope you enjoy them and share them with friends and family.

When baking scones there are a few tricks to remember if you want to make the butteriest flakiest scones possible. First, you are going to want your butter to be COLD. Second, you are going need to use a pastry blender to cut that cold butter into your flour. Cold cutting the butter is going to create the flakiest everyone craves in their scones. Utilize these tips and amaze everyone with your baking skills!

Orange Ginger Scones
Ingredients
- 2 cups flour
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1/3 cup sugar
- 1/4 cup butter
- 1/4 cup chopped candied ginger
- 1/4 cup chopped dark chocolate
- 1/2 cup milk
- 2 tbsp ⁃ fresh Squeezed orange juice
- 1 ⁃ Optional egg yolk and water coating
Orange Zest Glaze
- juice of 1/2 an orange
- 1/2 tsp orange zest
- 1/2 cup powdered sugar more if large orange used
Instructions
- Preheat Oven to 375.
- Combine flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt in medium bowl.
- Cut cold butter into dry ingredients with pastry blender.
- Add orange zest, a squeeze of the orange to the milk.
- Add liquid to dry ingredients and work dough until just combined.
- Add dark chocolate into dough and work in.
- Form dough into round about 1/2 inch thick. Score the top about half way through into six equal wedges.
- Mix egg yolk with 1 tbsp of water and brush over scones.
- Bake on parchment paper for 18-20 min.
- Place on rack to cool, then drizzle topping, and eat!
These scones are just the best recipe when hosting guests or family for brunch. Everyone loves to have a scone with their coffee or tea while brunch is cooking. Maybe you better make a double batch!
